記念すべき第1回目となる今回は、10年振りの来日ツアーを敢行するIan Fridayについて紹介したいと思う。

For our memorable first installment, we are excited to do a deep dive into Ian Friday, who is undertaking his first Japan Tour in exactly ten years.
Ian Fridayは、アフリカ系ディアスポラの人々の文化的伝統と歴史を探求し、紹介するオーディオ/ビジュアルキュレーター兼パフォーマンスアーティストである。Global Soul Musicの創設者であるIanは、HOUSE、SOUL、AFRO BEAT、JAZZ、WORLD MUSICを横断的につなぎ、脈動するブラック・ミュージック文化を記録し、その深層を探る音楽作品を手掛けている。また、The Colored Girls Museumの共同創設者として、博物館のプログラム開発を支援し、ソーシャルメディアプラットフォームのマーケティングを制作。長年にわたり開催されているNYCのパーティー体験”Libation“のレジデントDJであり、そこは世界中のSOULFULなものが集まる場所となっている。アフリカ系の人々の歴史は、主に口頭伝承を通じて時代を超えて受け継がれてきた。音楽とアートは、それらの物語に対する私たちの理解を深めるための伝達手段として機能している。
Ian Friday is an audio/visual curator and performance artist who explores and exhibits cultural traditions and histories of people from the African as diaspora. Founder of Global Soul Music, Ian produces music that archive and uncover ongoing black musical cultures connecting house, soul, afro beat, jazz and world music. As Co-Founder of The Colored Girls Museum, Ian assists in developing programming and creates marketing for the museum’s social media platforms. Resident DJ of long standing NYC party experience, Libation the home of all things globally soulful. The histories of people from African descent have been passed down through the ages primarily through oral tradition. Music and art serve as conduits to deepening our understanding of those narratives.
Ian Fridayは、NY, BrooklynのEast Flatbush育ちで、両親は共にカリブ海のグレナダ出身であり、彼はファミリーにおいてアメリカで生まれた第一世代の人間であった。彼が育った地域は、アジア、ラテン系、カリブ海、アフリカ系など、あらゆる人々が集まる文化のるつぼであり、この多文化な環境が彼の創造的な美学を形作る基盤となった。
ラテン音楽、アフリカン音楽、あらゆるブラックミュージックが流れる地域で育った彼は、10代の頃からWBLSやKiss FMのTimmy Regisford、Tony Humphries、The Latin Rascalsといったレジェンドたちのプレイを聴き、ハイスクール時代にDJ機材を持っていた先輩と出会った事で、DJという表現に情熱を傾けるようになる。大学進学後にカレッジラジオで番組を持ち、ラジオDJとして活動。”Music for the People”, “Sounds of the City“と呼ばれていたそれらの番組で、まだHOUSEミュージックというカテゴライズが存在していない時代に、アンダーグラウンドなCLUBミュージックを紹介していた。
そして、Paradise GarageやThe Loft、Zanzibar、SHELTERなどのレガシーなパーティーを体験していく中で、社会的弱者や抑圧された文化が迫害されることのない聖域で、自由に踊り、音楽を楽しみ、人々と空間を共にすること、ありのままの自分を表現することに強い魅力を感じ、シーンにのめり込んでいった。
Ian Friday grew up in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY. His parents were both from Grenada in the Caribbean, making him the first generation of his family born in America. The area where he was raised was a melting pot of cultures, bringing together people from Asian, Latin, Caribbean, and African backgrounds. This multicultural environment became the foundation that shaped his creative aesthetic.
He grew up in an area saturated with Latin music, African music, and all forms of Black music. In his teens, he listened to the legendary sets played by DJs like Timmy Regisford, Tony Humphries, and The Latin Rascals on WBLS and Kiss FM. His passion for DJing as a form of expression was ignited when he met an upperclassman in high school who owned DJ equipment. After enrolling in college, he hosted his own show on college radio and began his career as a radio DJ. Through these programs, which were called “Music for the People” and “Sounds of the City”, he introduced underground club music during a time when the category of “House Music” didn’t even exist yet.
And as he experienced the legendary parties like Paradise Garage, The Loft, Zanzibar, and SHELTER, he became deeply captivated by the scene. He was drawn to the idea of a sanctuary where marginalized and oppressed cultures would be free from persecution—a space to dance freely, enjoy the music, share the room with others, and express his true self without reservation.
Ian Fridayのキャリアにおいて、コミュニティ・ビルダーとしての地位を確立したのが、1994年よりBrooklynのFrank’s Loungeでオーガナイズしていたサンデーアフターヌーンパーティー”Tea Party“である。
アートのある空間にクリエイティブな人々が集うコミュニティを築くことをミッションに、毎週日曜日に開催されていたTea Partyでは、週替わりに色々な企画が催され、オープンマイクやLIVE、詩の朗読やヘルスケアなど、様々な人々がFeatureされていた。
そのコミュニティには、Erykah BaduやMos Defなど、今では大御所と呼べるような人々もこぞって参加しており、当時のNYでも一際話題のパーティーであった。ダンサーやアーティストから絶大な支持を集めていたこのパーティーは、ディアスポラ全体のあらゆる音楽がミックスされ、黒人と褐色の人々の虹色の連合が一体となって踊る信じられない光景、と評された。
Tea Partyは1996年にFrank’s Loungeを離れ、YWCAでの開催に移る。2000年にレギュラー開催を終了。その後2002年までは散発的なイベントが開催されていた。
Tea Party休止の後、新たに”Libation“というパーティーをオーガナイズ。ManhattanやBrooklynなど都度場所を変えながら現在も続けられており、近年では毎年5月に自身のBirthday Bashを兼ねたLibationを開催している。また、パンデミックによるロックダウンがあって以降、オンライン上でのDJ配信も行っており、配信プラットフォームであるTwitch上で毎週日曜日の夜(日本時間だと月曜午前)に”Libation Live”を実施。毎週フレッシュな選曲を披露している。
Ian Friday established his reputation as a community builder through the Sunday afternoon party, “Tea Party” which he organized starting in 1994 at Frank’s Lounge in Brooklyn.
With the mission of creating a community where creative people could gather in an art-filled space, the weekly Sunday Tea Party featured a rotating schedule of diverse events. Various individuals were showcased, including open mic sessions, live performances, poetry readings, and health/wellness initiatives.
The community attracted notable figures, including those who are now considered legends, such as Erykah Badu and Mos Def, making it an exceptionally hot topic in New York at the time. This party, which garnered immense support from dancers and artists, is sometimes described as an incredible sight where all the music of the entire diaspora was mixed, and a rainbow coalition of Black and Brown people danced together as one.
Also the tea party left Frank’s lounge in 1996 moving to the YWCA in that year and ended there in 2000. we have sporadic events until 2002.
Following the hiatus of Tea Party, Ian Friday began organizing a new party called “Libation“. This event continues to be held today, with the location changing periodically between Manhattan and Brooklyn. In recent years, he hosts a Libation party every May, which also serves as his Birthday Bash. Furthermore, since the lockdown due to the pandemic, he has also been streaming DJ sets online. He hosts “Libation Live” every Sunday night on the Twitch platform (Monday morning JST), where he presents a fresh selection of music each week.
プロデューサーとしては、NY老舗レーベルWest End Recordsに所属した後、2003年頃から本格的に制作活動を開始。”Blaze – We are one”のRemixが初作品ながらヒットとなり、その後2005年にWest End Blueからリリースされた自身名義の”The Island Life EP”は、20年以上経った今でも世界中のフロアでプレイされている。
2006年には、自身がオーガナイズするパーティーの名前を冠したレーベル”Tea Party Music“を設立。レーベル第1弾作品”Byron Moore – Life Starts Today”は、Timmy Regisford, Louie Vega, Osunlade, Danny Krivit, Joe Clausell, Kevin Hedge, Jihad Muhammadなど、数多くのTOP DJ達が世界中のフロアでプレイ。レーベル第3弾”Anto Vitale – Theorema Del Faya (Fire Theory)”は07年のMiami WMCにて絶賛され、Louie Vegaの”Lust – Art & Soul”をはじめ、数々のMIX CDに収録されるなどの大ヒットを記録した。
パーティーの休止に合わせ、レーベル名をTea Party Musicから”Global Soul Music“に変更した後も、現在に至るまで良質な作品を世に出し続けている。
As a producer, he began his professional production career around 2003, after being signed to the long-established NY label West End Records. His debut work, a remix of Blaze’s “We are one” was a hit, and his “The Island Life EP” released in 2005 on West End Blue, is still played on dancefloors worldwide more than 20 years later.
In 2006, he established his own label, “Tea Party Music” named after the party he organized. The label’s first release, “Byron Moore – Life Starts Today” was played on dancefloors across the globe by numerous top DJs, including Timmy Regisford, Louie Vega, Osunlade, Danny Krivit, Joe Clausell, Kevin Hedge, and Jihad Muhammad. The label’s third release, “Anto Vitale – Theorema Del Faya (Fire Theory)” was highly acclaimed at the 2007 Miami WMC and became a major hit, featuring on many mix CDs, including Louie Vega’s “Lust – Art & Soul”.
After rebranding the label from Tea Party Music to “Global Soul Music” coinciding with the hiatus of the party, he continues to release high-quality music to this day.
音楽を、人々を結びつけ、癒しをもたらす”#MusicHeals“のツールだと考える彼は、今後10年の展望として、音楽教育と次世代のメンタリングにさらに時間を費やし、自身の知識を若いDJやプロデューサーたちに伝えていきたいと語る。
カルチャーの創成期から現在に至るまで、そのコミュニティの中で生き続けてきた、まさにカルチャーの生き字引と呼ぶにふさわしいアーティストであり文化人の1人。

Viewing music as a tool for “#MusicHeals“which connects people and brings healing, he shares his vision for the next decade: he intends to dedicate more time to music education and mentoring the next generation, passing on his knowledge to young DJs and producers.
He is one of the artists and cultural figures who truly deserves to be called a living legend of the culture, having continuously lived within its community from its genesis to the present day.
